Detailed Summary[]

Submission Reel[]

In Sarasota, Florida, Jo gets a call from the Young Family, Joelle (37) and Sherman Sr. (38), have three kids Dylan (13), Sherman Jr. (Shermie) (5), and Shelby (3, almost 4).

Sherman and Joelle both work different time schedules. During the day, Sherman has the kids, and at night, he hands them to Joelle. While Sherman is driving, the kids cause mischief. Shermie is seen calling Shelby stupid and Sherman tells him off. Shermie says “She was kicking at me!”

Shermie tends to be the most aggressive and can get physical with his mom, older brother Dylan and sister Shelby. He would kick, slap and punch. As Joelle puts it "he believes it’s either his way or the highway." When he doesn’t get his way, everyone is going to pay for it. He constantly tells Joelle he hates her. To make matters worse, Shermie tends to bully Shelby quite often, as he pushes her down, hitting, and even on a few occasions he has actually gone as far as choking her. "That is one angry little boy" Jo states.

Worryingly for Joelle and Sherman, little sister Shelby is starting to copy her older brother’s aggressive behavior and ever since she was 7 months old, she would climb on anything. Sherman believes this comes from Shermie, who too likes climbing everywhere. When she’s bored with a board game, or doesn't want to play it anymore, she’ll act out, or throw the game away literally.

One of Joelle's main problems with Dylan is that he gets frustrated a lot with his siblings and can snap at them. He likes to go in his room a lot. Dylan constantly wants his privacy but Shermie would always come and invade his space. "Shermie wants to be with me all the time, but I like to have my alone time away from everyone," he explains.

Sherman says that he and Joelle need Jo's help, as if they continue yelling and screaming at the kids to do orders nothing will change at all. Joelle understands kids will be kids but she wants her family to be happy. "Oh yes, you do need my help, I'm on my way," Jo explains shutting her portable DVD player off.

Observation[]

When Jo arrives she finds Shermie and Shelby under a table just watching her. Jo finds it funny seeing the two doing what she does when she meets families, and the kids are reserved. Like all families, Jo arrives during the day, meaning Sherman is currently taking care of the kids, who’re left to fend for themselves. Shelby is seen spinning in circles and Shermie is sitting in his room or standing in the playroom, both clearly being bored, all whilst Sherman gets work done on his computer. To Jo, he was in his own little world.

Later, the kids get together to play with trains and race them. But Shermie begins teasing Shelby, because he was beating her, making her upset. The yelling gets loud enough for Sherman to come in. The kids desperately try and get him to play with them. Shermie asks Sherman if he can help him with the train tack. Sherman said "You can do it", as he's clueless when playing with the kids. Shermie then knocks Shelby’s train over leading to a confusing punishment. Jo believes she wasn't the only one confused as to her, discipline seems to make it up as you go along.

Jo then sees Shelby climbing the wall. “Me and Shermie do this,” Shelby tells Jo. Jo sees the kids as the “climbing monkeys.” Then both kids climb up the wall. Jo points out how they don't listen to Sherman when he tells them to stop. Jo does ask Sherman if anything is challenging while taking care of the kids. "Joelle can sit down with the kids and color with them, I'm not real big on that" Sherman explains. Jo didn't know what Sherman meant by that but she could tell that keeping the kids occupied is hard for him.

Later Joelle has to go home, so she and Sherman switch out. Jo finds it crazy as Joelle and Sherman can't talk. She just can’t believe this happens every day. When they got back home, Jo meets Dylan. Jo finds Dylan to be very sweet. Joelle says she will do dinner and the kids will entertain themselves before dinner is served.

It isn’t long before Dylan and Shermie get into an argument. Dylan wants Shermie out of his room but Shermie refuses. Joelle breaks up the argument and tells Shermie to get out. Eventually a frustrated Joelle carries Shermie out of Dylan’s room. As Shermie doesn't respect Dylan's privacy, Jo wants to speak to Dylan of how he feels about this. Dylan expresses that his siblings always come into his room wanting to play with him and he sometimes needs his space. He tells Jo that he mostly deals with them himself because his parents don’t always take care of it. Jo agrees that Dylan needs his space because he’s a teenager. Dylan brings up the fact that to him, he doesn’t get to spend time with his parents because his younger siblings demand their attention. Meanwhile Shelby and especially Shermie are causing mischief and Joelle is making threats to the kids.

When Jo finishes the conversation with Dylan she finds out that Shelby drew Shermie a picture. Joelle is happy that Shelby did something nice for her brother, but Shermie, wasn't as appreciative. He shockingly rips up the drawing. Joelle explains that it's typical for Shermie to do something like that, as he does it, deliberately knowing his sister's feelings will be hurt. Joelle threats Shermie with a spanking but instead puts him in his room. She yells at him about how he doesn't need to treat her like this. Joelle locks the door and Shermie tries to kick the door open.

Finally the kids settle down when dinner comes around. Jo finds out that the family are really quiet and don't usually talk with each other and that Shelby has her own little table to watch the TV.

Parents Meeting[]

At the Parents Meeting, Jo confronts Joelle about her empty threats and combative behavior with Shermie and how both parents don’t follow through with discipline and let the kids come and go as they please. Joelle admits nothing works. Jo tells them that they need to step up as parents and while they’re at it, Jo declares that part of why the kids are acting out is because Joelle and Sherman don’t spend quality time with them. Sherman needs to get off the computer more, and Joelle needs to stop coming home with boxing gloves on. Joelle is on board and she tells Jo she has three great children.

Teaching[]

Teaching starts of as usual with Jo bringing in her Family Routine. She brings a 30 minute limit to the kids’ screen time. From 5-5:30 the kids will have their screen time. However if the kids get in trouble for breaking the house rules, they lose it. The kids understand what Jo is telling them.

Afterwards Jo brings in The No Go Zone technique, so the kids know where they can climb and which rooms they can go to. Surprisingly enough it works. Shermie even tests it out to see if the red sign is there because he wants to go into Dylan's Room. Joelle is pleased.

That afternoon, Shermie refuses to listen to Joelle from getting out from under the table. Jo brings in the Naughty Corner technique. Shermie for 5 minutes and since Shelby is almost 4 she will get 4 minutes. After a warning, Shermie disobeys and Joelle takes Shermie there. Almost immediately Shermie leaves, starting a chase to get him back in the corner. It eventually leads to Jo, Joelle and Shelby finding Shermie in a tree. In an interview, Shermie says he can climb trees fast because "he's a monkey." Through the threat of losing his privelleges, he comes down. Shermie eventually gets the message and he apologizes to Joelle.

The next day, Sherman and Jo take the kids to the playground. Jo believes that kids need to let their climbing skills constructively and Sherman gets more active with them. Sherman plays with the kids and he gives them lots of praise for their attempts on the equipment. Then Jo takes him and the kids to a big hill. The kids roll around and play and Jo talks Sherman into rolling with them. “And we pushed daddy down the hill!” Shelby exclaims in the interview. The kids absolutely love it and Sherman had a lot of fun.

Once they get home, Jo notes how Joelle and Sherman never talk when they switch, so Jo brings up the idea to have Sherman use an audio recording to tell Joelle how his day was. When the switch happens, Sherman hands it to Joelle. She is surprised to see the recorder and to hear how the day went. Sherman is glad Jo showed this technique. The kids say “Turn it on again!”

Jo decides to bring up how the family are extremely quiet at dinner. So she decides to bring In The Talking Stick. Shelby asks Jo what The Talking Stick is and Shermie asks “Is it magic?”. Shelby is so excited that she decides to sit with her family. At Dinner Joelle hands Dylan The Talking Stick. Shermie questions why he doesnt have it, but Joelle tells Shermie he can have it the next time. Shermie responds well. Dylan talks about a movie he watched at school during science class. Everyone enjoys the conversation.

Before Jo leaves she assigns Joelle and Sherman with some homework to spend time with Dylan. They agree on it. Jo then tells Joelle to not fight with the kids and to be consistent with the discipline. Jo leaves for a few days.

Family Test Run[]

The next evening Joelle and Sherman do Jo’s assignment. They make an invitation for Dylan to invite him to go bowling. Dylan is pleased that they did that for him and accepts the invite. When they are there, Dylan loves it when he gets to have fun with his mom and dad.

The next day, the boys are out biking and scootering in the front driveway and sidewalk. Then Dylan calls Shermie a baby and the boys get into an argument. Sherman breaks up the fight and tells them they’re not supposed to fight. Dylan feels forced to play with his siblings. Sherman tells Dylan off when Dylan tries to explain himself. Then Shermie bikes into Dylan to get attention. This makes Dylan more irritated and wants to be alone. Jo suggests that Sherman should play with Shermie.

That afternoon, Joelle plays a game with Shermie and Shelby. However, Shelby gets frustrated and tells Shermie to move away as she punches him in the eye. As a result, Joelle takes Shelby to the Naughty Corner. In the interview, Shelby makes her iconic quote: “Shermie was crying cause I punched him in the eye.” But, right when Joelle leaves, Shelby has some tricks up her sleeves. First, she starts dancing out of the Corner, and then says “Mama!” while visibly mooning her mom on National TV. Joelle pulls Shelby's pants back up and warns, “This is a Naughty Corner, not a playtime!”. However, that doesn’t stop Shelby from creating mischief. She proceeds to run rings around Joelle as she keeps escaping. Jo says “Don’t engage with her mom, just put her back.”

The angrier Joelle becomes, the more tricks Shelby has. She throws little things and sits down when Joelle sees her. Then she escapes again. Then Shelby hits Joelle with a doll and Joelle gets furious with her. Then Shelby goes from throwing little toys off the shelves to throwing the bigger things. Shelby then does her most iconic moment, when she throws the books. Jo says Shelby is overriding Joelle’s authority and she needs to sorts this out. Then Joelle resorts to make empty threats to Shelby if she throws one more book. Shelby does so, and Joelle denies her videos and TV. Then, it is the last straw when Shelby threatens to throw a hoverboard, prompting Joelle to yell warningly "Don't! You! Dare!"

After a series of mischief becoming chaotic, Sherman comes home to a very upset Joelle. Sherman says when he looked at wife’s face, “She was very upset, she was at the end of her line.” Joelle tells Sherman that she did everything she can to stop Shelby from throwing books as she still continues to do as her parents are talking. Jo heads back.

DVD Meeting[]

Jo is proud of how much fun that parents had with Dylan.

When Jo shows the footage to Sherman and Joelle about Dylan and Shermie, they understand Shermie wants to be with Dylan a lot but that he needs his space too. Jo says there isn't anything wrong with an hour of the siblings having fun together, but she states that Dylan shouldn’t have to feel forced to play with his siblings and he does need his space. Joelle agrees.

Jo finally shows the clip of Shelby throwing books. Jo says that Shelby is behaving this way to get a reaction from mom. She jokes that Joelle loves a good bit of confrontation, and points out that she will feed into it. Jo also states that she doesn’t have a problem with Shelby being told that her screen time is lost. Ultimately, what Joelle should've done in the end was place Shelby in a different naughty corner. With Jo mentioning the back wall, and kitchen, as examples.

Reinforcement[]

Jo thinks Dylan should talk with Sherman and Joelle about how he feels about looking after Shermie and Shelby. He finally has the courage and his parents understand that he needs his space and he can just be the brother. Joelle and Sherman tell Dylan that they’re teaching Shermie and Shelby how to play together and they’re committed to help his distress.

Later on, it’s time for dinner. It’s unknown who received The Talking Stick. Everyone is ready except Shelby, because she is upset with the seat she was assigned. She stands on the chair and Joelle tells her to get down. Shelby isn't having any of it so with Jo’s help, Joelle takes her to the Naughty Corner for timeout. Shelby is so upset about the whole thing that she starts to throw those books again. This time, using what Jo suggested in the DVD meeting, Joelle takes Shelby without engaging with her to the back wall as her new Naughty Corner. When Shelby’s time is up, she isn’t ready to apologize at first. When Joelle comes back a second time, Shelby apologizes. Jo is proud that Joelle was firm but calm when she dealt with Shelby. Shelby sits down with her family, and they eat as if nothing happened at all.

Later that evening, Jo says goodbye. Shelby comes to hug Jo, and Jo comes to say by to Shermie. Then Dylan comes to hug Jo goodbye. Dylan says it’s hard saying goodbye to Jo because she was a lot of fun. Jo jokes with Sherman to keep rolling down those hills and tells Joelle to step back and pick her battles.

Family Update[]

Joelle says that kids are less combative. Joelle is seen playing hide and seek with the kids. The kids playing outside, riding their bikes, and enjoying mealtimes. Dylan says the younger kids are respecting his privacy a lot more. Shermie says that he’s been good and he’s been listening a lot more. Sherman says that Dylan is a lot more open a lot more with his parents. Joelle notices that she is smiling a lot more and the household is in control.

Reddit Questionnaire[]

Dylan answered several questions on Reddit.[1] The main post was created on January 20, 2013.[2] He stated that the reason Joelle and Sherman went on Supernanny was the loss of control over the household, his parents not knowing what to do and the need for outside help.

When Joelle wrote to the production company asking for help, the company provided her with a filming crew and asked her to film how things normally went in the house. Joelle sent the footage back to the company and some time after, a preliminary film crew had arrived to put masking tape over parts of the house.[3][4][5][6] Filming had lasted about two weeks.[7][8]

Jo slept at the Ritz Carlton Hotel during her time with his family.[9] Dylan wasn't too keen with the Naughty Corner, but he felt timeouts and leaving his siblings alone were better than aggression and yelling.[10] He stated his last name wasn't "Young" for legal reasons.[11] Dylan was not paid, but Joelle and Sherman were. He did not know how much.[12][13] Dylan felt that his family could have gotten help from somewhere other than National Television.[14] Dylan stated that Sherman had Bipolar Disorder.[15][16] At the time of the questionnaire, Dylan said he had his own place.[17]

  • A YouTube video titled Top 10 Most OUT OF CONTROL Children on Supernanny, talks about the UK version's episode, especially the fire. The video also included clips from this version of the episode, essentially mixing the two families up.

"Well my mom just wrote to them asking for help and telling them about how bad things were. they wrote back and asked for my mom to film how things were normally done in the house. they sent a camera and everything just for us. we sent that back and next thing we know theres a preliminary film crew to come and "greek" the house for television. and to be honest i have no clue how much they got paid for being on tv, i didnt get any of it so i sure as hell wasnt paid for my services! and i think the filming went on for about a month. if i remember correctly."
  4. "Greeking is a term used in the industry meaning that they had to go around the house and take masking tape over any and all brand name logos."

  10. "Basically the loss of control over the household, my parents didnt know what to do so they felt the need for outside help. so for some reason they resorted to national television. some did help, things like the naughty corner were complete fucking bullshit. but timeouts and leaving them alone were better than aggression and yelling."
